Media Competence.
- What students should know/be able to do after year 12
_
In one session of New Media in the EFL we talked about the media competence that students should have acquired after a certain grade in school. We talked about media competence after year 5, year 9 and year 12. I decided to turn it into an additional task of my e-portfolio. Instead of describing media skills and competences for all three grades I would like to focus only on year 12, because I think that due to the relatively new competence it is more important to summarize what students should know when they leave school instead of determining the skills and competences to certain school years. The implementation of new media differs from federal state to federal state and from school to school anyway. On the webpage bildungsserver.de you find a lot of information concerning media competence and the handling of it in the federal states of Germany.
Below you can see with which competences and skills we came up. I tried to categorize them into three main areas, i. e. media usage, copyright, etc. and data protection. As you can see below I name the competence on the left side and visualize or give an explanation on the right side.

These
competences are the most important concerning the use of the internet. Klicksafe.de
is the leading German websites that provide information about data protection.
It offers for example information about safe passwords and links to websites where you can generate them. There is also a whole rubric about social networks. The best thing about this webside is that the information are always up to date. Currently, there is, for instance, an article about the new ‘timeline’ profile of facebook. (klicksafe aktuell 04.
